The Yad Vashem Archives contains the largest collection of Holocaust documentation in the world. It is the basis for Holocaust research, the core material for the production of museums and exhibits, and a resource base for commemoration activities and education for future generations. We are convinced that accessibility to the documentation is relevant to millions all over the world. Therefore Yad Vashem decided over a decade ago to provide public access to all of its data and knowledge via the internet.

Making Holocaust documentation accessible is a very complex task, much more than an average Archive. It requires a combination of research knowledge, archival expertise and the use of advanced technology. Every year we collect millions of new items, originals and copies, documents, testimonies, films, photos and more from all over the world, in dozens of languages, various formats and in all sorts of condition, some catalogued some not.

The Yad Vashem Archives has become, thanks to a unique «industrialized” cataloguing methodology, a world leader in digitizing knowledge and information, and in making documentation accessible. In the presentation I would like to share with you some of those challenges as well as the methods that we are using in order to fulfill this mission.
